Work From Home.

An hourly wage is a good staple, and thanks to today’s technology, you can easily swap time for money without having to leave home.

There has never been a better time for mums to source freelance work from home. As a mum myself, I know firsthand how important it is to find work that fits around your family life. I made the move four years ago, and it has served as a staple income ever since.

Let me show you how to get started.

But first, if you’re doubting your ability to be a freelancer, let me highlight one important fact: there are SO MANY small businesses right now, who are grappling with a huge to-do list. They are looking for ways to lighten their load, but aren’t ready for the commitment of an ‘employee'.

This is where freelance work comes to save the day!

Identify what you can offer.

STEP ONE:

Start by identifying your core skills, expertise and experience.

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. What programs do you know how to use?

  2. What were the tasks you completed in previous jobs?

  3. What are you naturally good at doing?

  4. How could you help to alleviate the burdens of a time-pressed business owner?

STEP TWO:

Build your profile.

Create a succinct resume that highlights your qualifications and experiences. Craft a compelling cover letter outlining the services you can provide, your availability, and your hourly rate. Don’t forget to include a little colour that showcases who you are as an individual - small businesses respond well to real people. A bit about what excites and interests you, as well as a clear photograph. Canva has some simple templates you can use if you need assistance with layout.

Research your community.

STEP THREE:

Delve into your local business community. Identify small businesses that align with your passion or field of expertise. Local entrepreneurs often prefer working with freelancers from their community.

You can do this by looking at your local community’s Facebook page (many businesses post on there), talking to friends, keeping an eye out for local business signage, approaching small businesses in the area that you personally use, or hit up good old Google.

It’s time to reach out. And then follow up!

STEP FOUR + FIVE:

Begin your outreach efforts with well-crafted emails introducing yourself, and detailing how you can assist them in their journey.

After an initial email, don't hesitate to follow up with a phone call after a week (an in-person drop in is even better). Persistence can lead to promising opportunities.

STEP SIX:

Consistency is key.

Commit to reaching out to at least three potential clients every day for a week. The cumulative impact of your efforts will likely surprise you by the end of the week.

Embracing freelancing as a path to both personal and professional fulfillment is an exciting journey. It offers you the freedom to work around your family’s schedule, bring in extra money for your household, whilst also making a significant impact on local businesses.

A life of freedom, begins with you.
